Mad studied English riding two years while touring the East Coast with her one-woman show "Swing Along With Mel". She religiously took classes once or often twice a week. Being in New York one month and the next Maryland for three years, this was quite a feat! She even found a teacher on Martha's Vineyard when she performed there yearly. Her only prior riding experience had been at "Hazelwild Farm Camp" when she was six years old with her first love "Little Tyke" a lovely Shetland pony. While in Maryland she studied from a dressage master at Potomac Horse Farm. Mad recalls the first time she went upstate to ride for fun while living in New York City. The teacher handed her the reins of a giant, imposing, extremely intelligent horse. Mel looked up at him and he looked down at her. It was in this moment that Mel knew it would be a big climb to the top of the riding mountain. "I have to get on this thing?" |
